Android: Greed
I just uploaded another Android app, this one called "Greed."
It's basically an RSS reader that integrates with Google Reader. It started out as a feature in Handstand that grew to immense size and didn't really fit with that application, so I removed it and turned it into its own application. I also fixed a lot of things that were wrong with it when it was part of Handstand.
As a result of this release, there will be a new release of Handstand with that feature removed.

I like it so far. But, the icon really should have the little guy reading the newspaper while sitting on the can.

That's what my wife thought it was. I hadn't thought of it, but that is a great idea.

Can you address the security concerns that some people have expressed on the Market? They are afraid that their Google IDs and password can be stolen by a malicious coder (YOU!). Thanks.

I'd also like to +1 Heather Tower's request that somehow the security issue is addressed. Since Android is always signed into the users Google account, isn't there a way to take advantage of that pre-existing authentication?

I'll be looking into how to use Google credentials as soon as possible. It would definitely be my preference, but I have not been able to find out how to access the pre-existing credentials.

It is great I love it. However, if you click Unread items, it still shows read items. If you back out of the application, it defaults back to All items.
It would great if you could sort by oldest first as well. My preferred reading method is to only display unread items and read oldest first.
Thanks for the app, it is great.

This is just what I have been looking for, thank you. Some things I would suggest:
- all items or unread items does not seem to be consistently remembered after app is exited and restarted
- the full page reading mode with the left/right arrows is _GREAT_, but after 10 items have been read, no further right arrow is shown, and I have to go back to the list view, pan down to the bottom of the page, wait for it to load more items, then back to page view - please have page load next 10 when it gets to the end (even better would be to incrementally load pages in the background so there is no user visible delay)
- it would be great to selectively enable/disable categories or feeds - there are some feeds that i would like to view on desktop, but not on mobile, so would like to exclude from mobile reading
Keep up the great work!

I am really liking your program except...If you were to add a "mark all as read" button we could keep our phones clear. Who reads every article? I had to remove my news channels because I couldn't keep up with the flow. This button would allow us to do everything from the mobile device. Keep up the good work!

Darryl,
There is a "mark feed as read" item on the context menu for a feed. Do you have something else in mind, perhaps a "mark all feeds as read"?

I like this program a lot but it takes up a lot of memory. Is it storing a lot of feed data in the phone's memory? If so could that data be stored on the SD card?

This is a great little app. I'd echo the comments about using the stored Google login credentials.
Regarding the 'mark items as read' facility: what I'd really like is a button to mark all items read actually in the list of items, next to the 'All items' and 'Unread items' buttons. This is feasible in landscape mode but I think there might not be sufficient space in portrait version. Otherwise there could be an option in the menu button.
Finally, it would be nice if the page orientation could change automatically.
Thanks for the great work.

Thanks Halloway!
The "mark all as read" option you mentioned is coming, it will be in the options menu. That's probably the most-requested feature of Greed, aside from the "don't use my credentials" one. :-)
I should have an update coming up on Sunday.

You deserve big props! The biggest drawback to Google's awesome greader was an inability to increase the text size on mobile platforms. Your "Greed" app renders everything beautifully. This is an app I would GLADLY pay for.
I encourage a boost to the security component as many before me have brought up. Thank you for putting your time and effort into this great app.

I just bought the app and the fonts are sooooo tiny. When looking at my "whats new" section I see the feed name in readable font but then the actual post name is above it in a font I can read but just barely. Any idea how to make that bigger?

Ian, I'm guessing you're running this on a Droid. Please e-mail me, and I'll send you a copy of Greed that fixes this.
Thanks, Kelly

I have been trying your free version of Greed to see how it works. I like it so far however I have a Motorola Droid so I have the same micro size font issues others have talked about. Do you have a demo/free version of Greed to try out? I would like to buy the full version as your the only game in town (NewsRob sends usage stats back to the developer). How does one contact you?

dwok, You can use the "E-mail the developer" link in the Market application on Android to contact me.

How do you make the Podcast feature work?
At 10:17 PM , Anonymous said...
trying to figure out how to make the Podcast work..
At 7:01 AM , Kelly said...
To make the podcast feature work, go to an article that has the little paper clip icon on it. Either long-press it and select "Attachments...", or open it and touch the paper clip icon that appears on the viewer. The Attachments screen opens at that point. From there, you can either touch the attachment to stream it and listen to it, or you can long-press it and select "Download" to download it to your Music folder for later listening using the built-in Media player.

Tried using it, but no articles show up. When I click on What's New, I get the following error:
At line 1, column 0: not well-formed (invalid token)
My address and password are correct and were triple-checked.

Excellent program. Would it be possible to add an option to download the feeds for reading offline. I am currently using NewsRob and offline reading is the ONLY reason I have not switched fully to Greed.

Mark,
At this point, all I can do is laugh an evil-sounding laugh and say "Wait till the next update, mwahahahaha..."
Joking aside, offline content is coming. I'm actually working on that this week, and hope to have something up this weekend.
Thanks,
Kelly

I had to change my password to be able to log in to Greed. In my original password I had characters like "&" and "!", but the app wouldn't let me log in. I changed the password to letters only, and it worked. Is this a bug in the program?
