Greed II: A Full version

I just released a new version of Greed, with some updates.

First off, Greed is now a paid application. I experimented with the idea of supporting Greed's development through donations, reasoning that people that liked it would be inclined to donate, and people that didn't care too much wouldn't donate. That worked, but I think the conventional approach of making it a paid application works better. Greed is now called "Greed Full", and will co-exist on your phone alongside the original version. Why you would want to do that is anyone's guess, but the ability is there in any case.

As for actual new features:

The main new feature off-line caching support. You can now long-touch a feed and cache its articles to the SD card in your phone, so you can read the articles off line. The next thing I want to do is add support for caching the actual articles. I held off doing that in this release, since I wanted to iron out the question of how to download a bunch of content in the background without dragging the phone down. Having gotten that to work well, I think it's going to get more interesting now, since downloading the content to the phone will make things like the Media player work better for podcasts and such.

Also new is a new article viewer with cool controls that fade into view when you touch the screen, and fade out after a while. There's also a "Friends' Shared Items" option on the main menu, some optimizations in the way feed lists are displayed, and some other minor bug fixes.

The next version will have the aforementioned offline support, and also a series of pop-up windows that ask you if you're sure you want to do X (where "X" is pretty much anything that requires internet access). I'm going to call it "Greed Vista Ultimate."

Any chance of a non-Market paid version for Greed addicts outside of the US and Europe?

Thanks a whole lot for singlehandedly dumping YOUR WHOLE NON-US USERBASE.

    Massive Fail, pal.

At least offer a free older version before completely alienating your users.

Yes, let me see about putting a non-Market version out for non-US/Europe users. Sorry about the inconvenience.

I'll just assume "=========" is your last name, and call you "Al." :-)

Anyway, I just put the free Greed back up. It's called "Greed Lite" now (although I'm thinking "Freed Greed" might have been better...) Anyway, keep an eye out for new posts here. I'll post something here once I get an updated version up. If you contact me, I'll make sure you get a copy of the update.

    Thanks!

Sure there is... What places do you have access to? If you're able to purchase something from SlideME, I could put a copy there.

Love the Flip Orientation feature. Any chance you can use the accelerometer to flip the orientation automatically? That would be awesome if you could. By the way, I tried out Greed (lite) and loved it so much I bought RingControl and Greed just a few minutes later. I'm so happy I never have to use the mobile reader site ever again.

Do you have plans for building a media player into Greed? Having to keep Android's media player active to listen to an audio enclosure doesn't work for me. I was really hoping to be able to get rid of DoggCatcher.

I am actually planning to do that at some point. I don't mind the built-in media player, but you're right... you kind of have to keep it in the foreground for it to work right.

    Hi there,
Greed is an awsome Tool thx for it,
but there will be some bugs in the Full-Version. First it isn´t posible to mark feeds as read and deleting a feed. Need an quick update.

    Sascha,

I'm tracking this bug. It has to do with the way Google Reader wants to see feed IDs. I'll bet you're noticing it only happens on feeds where the feed URL has parameters in it. That's the issue. I should have an update for it coming up soon.

    Thanks.

Love Greed -- just paid for it through Android Market. Finally got me to move my RSS Feeds out of Thunderbird and into Google Reader so i can read them on my G1. The syncing is fantastic.

One feature request: I love the silent notifications, but my phone is still vibrating on new notifications. I do want to know when I have new stuff to read, but I don't want it to wake me up at night, and sometime the vibration is enough. Could the silent notifications also have a way to disable vibration?

    Thanks!

I dont see it in the Android Market ... Can you point me where to go to get (buy) the full version?

    Phillipe,

The latest version is Cupcake (1.5) only, so if your OS hasn't been upgraded to 1.5, you won't be able to see it in the market. The only other issue I can think of is that it might not be available as a paid application in your locale.

    Thanks,
    Kelly
